The Fading Art of 《Freehand Embroidery》
Most of Pangandaran's embroidery is created using 《freehand embroidery》.
We are often asked, "How is 《freehand embroidery》 different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery reads an embroidery pattern and stitches it automatically, resulting in uniform, identical designs.
In contrast, 《freehand embroidery》 is a craft where the artisan manually moves the fabric to create the embroidery pattern.
Because it is made by human hands, each piece has its own unique expression. No two embroidered pieces are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that resembles hand embroidery. It involves transferring an outline to the fabric and stitching while referring to the original design, coordinating with the up-and-down movement of the sewing machine needle – a skill that is impressive just to imagine.
Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam who can perform freehand embroidery. Of these, only about 50 work professionally. Furthermore, only 30 have passed the highest embroidery certification level, Level 4. Among them, a mere 10 can execute Pangandaran's intricate designs, which are considered particularly challenging. However, being skilled is not enough; embroidery requires artistic sensibility. Subtle nuances can significantly alter the overall impression.
For this reason, at Pangandaran, we entrust our work to Hun, a master artisan. Hun, currently 46 years old, has been embroidering since he was 15, making him a veteran of 31 years in this field. Moreover, he possesses exceptional artistic talent. We place our complete trust in him.
With Vietnam's economic development, traditional crafts, like elsewhere, face a challenging environment. Since 2000, the number of people capable of freehand embroidery has been rapidly declining. While there used to be schools, now skilled artisans train apprentices. Hun has taught four individuals so far, but he notes that there are no young people capable of this craft today.
Due to rapid economic growth, manual craftsmanship is being left behind, and the number of artisans is expected to decrease further. This trend is accelerating even faster than in Japan, and the national system offers little protection.
As a result, Vietnam's freehand embroidery is on the verge of disappearing within the next decade or so.
In this video, we invited the highly skilled artisan Hun to create the "Sudden Rain Embroidery."
Witness the beauty of embroidery brought to life with his assured technique.
