Original American Exhibition Poster
Artist: David Hockney
David Hockney is an important artist who rose to fame in the UK in the 1960s. When he first came to prominence, he was still a student at the Royal College of Art in London. Together with Aaron Jones, R.B. Guittard and other classmates and seniors, he participated in the 1961 "Young Contemporaries" annual exhibition held at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, jointly opening up a new British pop aesthetic.
In 1964, Hockney moved from London to Los Angeles and began to paint about life in Southern California, with rolling hills, swimming pools and modernist buildings, many of which have homoerotic overtones. Hockney also likes to use landscapes as his medium, including landscape paintings from the 1980s and collages made with Polaroid cameras and 35mm color negatives, as well as mural-sized landscape banners and stage sets. In recent years, he has used iPads to paint, continuing to explore the relationship between visual perception, space and technology.
Tate Britain, the Centre Pompidou and the Metropolitan Museum of Art have organized a major retrospective of Hockney’s enduring career, which continues into his eighties, with his works in the collections of major art institutions around the world, including the British Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Hayward Gallery Art Society in London.
David Hockney is loved by many for his ability to touch upon the ordinary - the stuff the world is largely made of. He likes to let it float a little, to involve us, as Hockney both provides a subject and lets us process the scene ourselves.
We go back to 1964, when 27-year-old David Hockney moved from England to sunny California. Inspired by the environment of the American West Coast, he painted numerous pictures of swimming pools with or without people, usually in delicate pink, light blue or light green tones.
Today, David Hockney lives in Normandy, where he continues to experiment with materials and capture the mood of the place with his fantastic line and definitive sense of color.
