About Wood Firing "Wood firing" is a traditional kiln firing method that reaches temperatures above 1200°C using firewood. The natural "fire marks" left by the direct flames on the pottery, and the ash naturally settled from the burning wood, create rich, warm colors and varied textures that are unattainable with electric or gas kilns. Compared to standard electric and gas kilns, the wood firing process—from stacking the kiln, ignition, sealing the kiln, to cooling—takes approximately 8-10 days. Furthermore, the high pressure within the wood kiln, along with factors like humidity, wood dryness, the speed of stoking, and kiln placement, can significantly impact the success of a piece, leading to a higher rate of breakage. Experienced wood-firing artisans carefully consider the airflow within the kiln when stacking, planning the placement of works of different sizes, estimating the path of the flames, managing the stoking of wood and charcoal, and controlling the intensity of the fire.
