But where do you put it when you get home? The Ear Hook was created to solve this. It is a solid wood hook designed for your entryway, sized perfectly for a leash. The ear shape allows both tips to function as hooks. It takes eleven precise cuts to create the eleven planes that form the ear shape. Each cut requires careful angle calculation, positioning the blade perfectly to complete the shape in one pass. But once the raw form is created, the most intricate work begins. The eleven planes, each with four edges, overlap in places. Because these edges are so fine, machine sanding is impossible, and standard sanders cannot reach them. Each edge must be meticulously hand-sanded with precision sandpaper. After rounding the edges, further sanding is required. Since the wood grain varies across every surface, certain areas are particularly challenging to finish. Yet, the work must be thorough: **"If the Ear Hook feels rough to the touch, people will think, 'This doesn't feel like an ear should.' After a few times, the designer wasn't satisfied with the experience. The Ear Hook is a labor of love and a handcrafted piece; to see it wrapped in plastic and tucked away in a box felt like a missed opportunity. We updated the packaging accordingly. Boxes are matched to the quantity purchased, whether you buy one, two, or four. We use premium paper pulp shreds inside to fill the space, making the hook feel like it’s resting on a comfortable bed. This update makes the item ready to be gifted to friends and family as-is. ■ Adhesive or screw-mounted—choose your method Each Ear Hook comes with all the necessary hardware for both installation methods. No additional purchases are required. **Adhesive method**: Includes two 3M non-marking double-sided adhesive strips. Simply attach to the back of the hook and stick to the wall—no drilling required. Recommended for long-term use with lighter items like hats, leashes, or towels. **Screw-mounted method**: Includes a hardware kit with two sets of metal plates, four short screws, four long screws, and four wall anchors. The back of the hook has four small holes to attach the plates using the short screws. The other half of the plates are screwed into the wall using the long screws and anchors. This method is recommended for heavier items like bags and backpacks. There are also two larger holes on the back if you prefer to mount the hook directly to the wall without the plates. It measures 15 cm wide and 7.5 cm high. Because photos can make it appear larger, we recommend checking the dimensions with a ruler before ordering. ■ Installation takes a little time We provide hardware for both methods, but the first installation may require some time to figure out. One customer noted, "Although it took a little time to figure out the assembly, the result is very cute." If you have trouble, please contact the designer directly; one customer specifically noted that the designer’s advice on the non-damaging mounting method was very helpful. ■ Is the adhesive strong enough? It is suitable for lighter items like hats, leashes, and towels. For bags, please use the screw-mounted method. Some customers who used the provided double-sided tape reported that it holds very securely. ■ What kind of finish is used? A water-based wood finish. We do not use solvent-based (oil-based) lacquers. The difference lies in the diluent: **Water-based finishes use water to thin, while solvent-based finishes rely on organic solvents.** We use the former for all our products. In the days after application, there is no pungent odor in the workshop—a difference we smell every day. Water-based finishes are more labor-intensive. Oil-based lacquers often don't require sanding between layers. Water-based lacquers, however, don't dissolve the previous layer, so sanding is essential for proper adhesion. The process is: 80 grit → 150 grit → <1st coat> → 240 grit → <2nd coat> → 240 grit → <3rd coat> → 600 grit → <4th coat>. That is four coats with three sanding sessions in between. We chose the more labor-intensive method.
