A: In everyday terms, when silver jewelry turns black, it's often called "oxidation." Oxidation refers to a substance reacting with oxygen. However, silver (jewelry) turning black is actually a reaction with "sulfur" in the air. The black substance on the surface of silver (jewelry) (which can appear coffee-colored, light brown, dark brown, or reddish-brown) is "silver sulfide." Generally, if silver (jewelry) isn't properly maintained, it will darken and lose its luster. Therefore, the correct term is "sulfidation," which is a reaction caused by hydrogen sulfide in the air or sulfur dioxide in moisture, forming silver sulfide on the surface of the silver (jewelry).
