Legend tells of Dionysus, the god of wine, who, during a forest feast, saw the beautiful maiden Amathusia passing by. Intoxicated, Dionysus passionately pursued the maiden, only to be rejected by Amathusia. In a fit of anger, Dionysus decided to play a trick on the maiden, summoning beasts to attack her. Helpless, Amathusia could only beg for help from Artemis, the goddess of the moon who watched over her. Hearing her plea, Artemis transformed Amathusia into a white crystal statue, saving her from being torn apart by the wild beasts. Upon sobering up, Dionysus saw the scene and was filled with remorse. He inadvertently spilled the wine from his goblet onto the statue, and to his surprise, the statue was forever stained with the beautiful hue of wine.
