The outermost layer of silica forms a cryptocrystalline, opaque, and sealed shell. As the silica colloid cools, it forms chalcedony (agate), which lines the inner wall of the shell. The silica in the center cools again, eventually crystallizing into quartz grains and crystal clusters, forming a hollow cavity.
