I created this artwork based on the classic Japanese legend of Anchin and Kiyohime. This story, which appears in traditional Japanese literature, Noh, and Kabuki theater, tells a tragic tale of betrayal and obsession. Kiyohime, heartbroken and enraged after being deceived by the young monk Anchin, transforms into a serpent and ultimately burns him to death.
The title, "Never Let Go", symbolizes Kiyohime’s passionate love and relentless obsession, evoking strong emotions in the viewer. Through the textures and colors unique to woodblock printing, I aimed to express her unwavering devotion, maddening love, and inescapable fate.
Concept Behind the Artwork
Kiyohime’s emotions in this story are complex—a mixture of love, anger, and despair. I visualized these emotions using the following symbolic elements:
The entangled red threads – Representing fate, Kiyohime’s obsession, and flames of passion.
The skull – A symbol of Anchin’s inevitable demise.
The serpent – A manifestation of Kiyohime’s transformation and fury.
Particular emphasis was placed on the blue color of the serpent. Traditionally, Kiyohime is depicted as a fire-breathing snake, but I chose a cool blue to highlight the stillness of her solitude and unwavering obsession. What remains after passion burns out may be nothing but emptiness—this thought guided my creative process.
