Astrophytum myriostigma is a succulent plant belonging to the Astrophytum genus in the cactus family, native to central and northern Mexico. It is known for its peculiar shapes. The plant typically grows as a single sphere, often covered in fine, white, dot-like hairs. It features 3-5 ribs, each with a areole, but without spines, only a small amount of short, brown fuzz. As the plant matures, the number of ribs can increase, eventually forming various unique shapes.
Astrophytum myriostigma is uniquely shaped yet charming, and incredibly easy to grow. Since it lacks spines and can bloom, it's ideal not only for enthusiasts who love cacti but fear thorns, but also for children who enjoy plants.
Depending on the number of ribs and surface color, Astrophytum myriostigma has many variations, such as the triangular, quadrangular, and pentagonal types, as well as the red-leaf, turquoise, and large-horned varieties. There are even stunning variegated forms. As a succulent of the cactus family, Astrophytum myriostigma also flowers, producing fragrant yellow blooms after a certain period of growth.
The plant discussed here is the Astrophytum capricorne.
Astrophytum capricorne is a succulent plant in the Astrophytum genus of the cactus family. Its surface is covered with fine, white, dot-like hairs. Some Astrophytum capricorne develop spines as they grow larger, while others remain spineless. The available plant currently does not have spines, and it is uncertain if they will develop later.
Growing Environment
It thrives in environments with abundant sunlight and good ventilation. During hot summer months, it's best to place it in a cool, well-ventilated spot to prevent pests and diseases. After late autumn, move the plant indoors to receive more light. In winter, provide ample light to encourage blooming. It has a degree of drought tolerance, but grows faster in moist substrate. During its early growth stages, keep the soil consistently moist, especially in hot weather, maintaining an air humidity of around 70%. As autumn approaches and the weather cools, reduce watering appropriately.
Watering
Watering requirements are quite specific during the growing season. Avoid getting water into the crown of the plant, as this can lead to rot. Water thoroughly each time, ensuring the entire pot is moistened, but avoid overwatering. When the air humidity is high, suspend watering to prevent root rot.
Succulents and cacti are sensitive to water and light, and watering frequency will vary with the environment and climate. Generally, watering once a week is sufficient.
Fertilizing
Astrophytum myriostigma does not have high fertilizer requirements, but it grows more vigorously in nutrient-rich soil. During the growing season, apply a diluted liquid fertilizer once a month. Avoid using concentrated or raw fertilizers, as this can cause leaf rot. Stop fertilizing in winter and keep the soil slightly dry.
π Key Takeaways: Ample sunlight, good ventilation, water once a week, water thoroughly when dry.
π There are six species in the Astrophytum genus, all with beautiful spots, though some cultivated varieties may not.
The Astrophytum genus list includes:
Astrophytum myriostigma
Astrophytum coahuilense (also called Astrophytum myriostigma)
Astrophytum capricorne
Astrophytum asterias (Pincushion Cactus)
Astrophytum ornatum
Astrophytum caput-medusae (very rare)
