■ About Moissanite
The moissanite used in this piece is a [synthetic gemstone].
It is a type of mineral, also known as moissanite.
Its composition is silicon carbide, with the chemical formula SiC.
In terms of hardness (Mohs scale), moissanite ranks 9.25 – 9.5, second only to diamond's 10 among gemstones. Furthermore, it is rated higher than diamond for its resistance to breaking under significant force.
Regarding brilliance, a key factor in a gemstone's value, moissanite surpasses diamond. In terms of refractive index, which measures the intensity of sparkle, moissanite measures 2.65 – 2.69 compared to diamond's 2.42. For dispersion, which creates the dazzling flashes of light, moissanite measures 0.104, approximately 2.5 times that of diamond's 0.044.
Diamonds have an affinity for oils, making them prone to attracting sebum and other substances, which can dull their sparkle. Moissanite, with its lower affinity for oils, is easier to care for and less likely to lose its brilliance.
Moissanite naturally occurs very rarely on Earth, primarily found in meteorites. The first moissanite was discovered in the Canyon Diablo meteorite in Arizona, USA (1893). Moissanite found in the Allende meteorite is believed to originate from particles ejected during supernova explosions.
While it is considered a high-value synthetic gemstone and distinct from diamond, it offers excellent cost performance with comparable hardness, brilliance, and clarity to diamond, making it a worthwhile jewelry option.
