Poseidon's Trident forged
This forged, handmade decorative piece is inspired by ancient Greek myths about the god of the sea, Poseidon (Neptune in Roman mythology).
According to the myth mentioned in the "Library" by Pseudo-Appolodorus, Poseidon's trident was created by the Cyclopes, well, in the "Ob smithy" - the merry smiths!
Poseidon used his trident in several myths:
He used it to strike a rock on the hill of the Acropolis of Athens to create a well (the Erechtheion) with seawater during his rivalry with the goddess Athena for the possession of Attica. The supposed imprint of the trident on the rock and the seawater spring at the Erechtheion were witnessed by the geographer Pausanias during his visit to Athens,
created the spring by striking it with his trident as a reward for Amimone, who shared a bed with him. According to another version, Poseidon used his trident to scare off the Satyr who tried to dishonour Amimona after she mistakenly struck him with her hunting lance,
Poseidon touched the island of Dilos with his trident to attach it to the seabed.
Angered by the sacrilegious behavior of Ajax the Lesser, Poseidon split the rock he was clinging to with his trident.
The trident symbolizes the three properties of water: fluidity, fertility and nourishment. The Roman grammarian Moor Servius Honoratus explained the three ends of Neptune's trident by saying that "the sea is considered the third part of the world, or because there are three kinds of water: seas, streams and rivers."
According to Friedrich Wieseler and several other scholars, the trident of Poseidon is a harpoon for fishing, typical of coastal Greeks. According to H. B. Walters, the trident of Poseidon is derived from the lotus scepter of Zeus, with Poseidon being Zeus in his guise as the sea god.
