The world is much like a circus tent, and we are all playing the part of a "clown" somewhere. Carrying our burdens, we still face forward, smiling in front of others. We create smiles to reassure those around us. This image resonates with the modern individual. This doll stands with a touch of pride, yet appears somewhat lonely. At its feet rests a small toy rocking horse. Perhaps this clown is reminiscing about a time when smiles came as easily as they did in childhood. The image of the "sad clown" originated in 19th-century European art. Pierrot, the white-clad jester, was depicted as someone who, while making others laugh, harbored solitude and unrequited love. Furthermore, the famous scene in the 1892 opera *Pagliacci*, where the character must laugh even with a broken heart, cemented this image globally. Those who bring smiles to others often carry a quiet sorrow within them—it is as a symbol of this duality that the clown has been so long beloved. This is a one-of-a-kind artistic doll, meticulously crafted by layering Japanese *washi* paper, carefully shaping its expression and the texture of its costume. It possesses the soft texture and quiet presence unique to *washi*. The harder one tries, the more likely one is to put on a smile in public. If seeing this doll makes you feel even a little that it might represent you, then this clown was surely made for you. A small reward for your efforts. ---------- Background and production process for this work are detailed in our blog post.
