This bottle features a small mouth with a slight flare, a short straight neck, rounded shoulders, a long tapering body, and a ring foot. The mouth rim is highlighted with gilt. The entire outer surface is adorned with smooth rouge-red enamel, intricately decorated with famille rose scrolling lotus branches and floral patterns. The base is covered in celadon glaze, and the blue enamel inscription in seal script reads "Made in the Qianlong Reign of the Great Qing Dynasty" in three lines.
The overall shape of this meiping vase is well-rounded, and the floral decorations on top employ traditional Chinese painting techniques, including shading and freehand brushwork. The application of rouge-red enamel enhances the elegance, and upon close examination, the depiction of flowers and leaves showcases various poses, perspectives, and color variations. The meticulous use of famille rose glazes and exquisite craftsmanship exudes sophistication and delicacy, portraying a sense of grace and refinement.
The meiping vase originated in the Northern Song period, named for its mouth size suitable for holding plum branches. The use of rouge-red enamel glaze emerged in the late Kangxi period, introducing Western glazing techniques by incorporating gold into the red glaze, fired at a lower temperature. Early on, it was often applied to thin-bodied white-glazed vessels for consistent color development. However, achieving such vibrant results on a large meiping vase with its rounded and complex surface, using a thicker application of rouge-red enamel, is exceptionally rare and challenging.
