Material Selection The cowhide currently selected by "Cut Line" is all Grade A, high-fat vegetable-tanned leather from Italy. As it is a natural material, and the tannery uses vegetable tanning processes that cause minimal damage to the leather, it's unavoidable to find minor "scars," "wrinkles," or "veins" on the leather surface. We make every effort to avoid these during the cutting process, or we place these parts on less visible or non-load-bearing areas of the product. 2. Hand-Stitched Seams We do not use sewing machines to craft our products; all items are meticulously hand-stitched. Before stitching, we use a specialized diamond chisel to punch sewing holes in the leather, which is how we achieve the beautiful wavy stitching effect, distinct from machine stitching. While this significantly increases production time, it is a crucial step where the leather artisan imbues the piece with soul and a warm, supple feel. 3. Hand-Burnished Edges Before finishing, the edges of the leather are burnished. This is done to make the edges appear smooth, rounded, and natural. "Cut Line" has its own unique edge-finishing method. First, sandpaper is used to repeatedly smooth the sharp edges. Then, an edge-sealing liquid is applied to make the edges appear flat. This process is repeated 2-3 times, followed by a layer of edge-sealing wax. Finally, a burnishing tool is used to repeatedly polish the edges until they achieve a smooth finish. 4. Hand-Dyed Leather For our hand-dyed products, "Cut Line" currently uses US-imported Fiebing's leather alcohol dyes. To achieve even and natural coloration, we first dampen the leather surface with water. Then, using a sponge, we apply the dye layer by layer, from light to deep, until we reach the desired color. After drying, a fixing agent is applied to enhance colorfastness. We also wipe the surface with clean water to remove any dust and further even out the color. As the dyeing is done entirely by hand, there are subtle variations in color between each bag, making every piece unique.
