When the sun is low and behind the flower, the petals become translucent: the colour glows from inside rather than reflecting from the surface, and the whole flower seems to be lit by its own internal light. It is a small flower — the size of a child's cupped palm — and it appears with no stem to speak of, sitting directly on the ground, before any leaves have come. That directness, that refusal of ceremony, is part of what makes it so striking against the last of the cold. The crocus genus contains about 100 species, native to a broad band from southern Europe and North Africa through the Middle East to Central Asia and western China. Some are autumn-flowering; the majority bloom in late winter and early spring, often pushing through snow. The most economically significant species is Crocus sativus, the saffron crocus — a sterile triploid that cannot reproduce by seed and must be propagated by corm division.
