**Javan Tiger**
The Javan tiger once inhabited the island of Java in Indonesia, being the third tiger subspecies to live within Indonesia's borders, alongside the Bali tiger and the Sumatran tiger.
The Javan tiger was originally very common, but in the 19th century, its habitat was severely damaged by Dutch colonizers, and the Javan tiger was also overhunted, leading to a drastic decline in numbers. By 1950, fewer than 50 remained.
In 1972, the Indonesian government finally took action, establishing a protected area in the southeastern part of Java. However, by then, only three Javan tigers were left, and they ultimately could not escape extinction, becoming the most recently extinct tiger.
