About Wood Firing
'Wood firing' is a traditional kiln method where the kiln is heated to over 1200 degrees Celsius using wood.
This process leaves natural 'fire marks' from direct contact with the wood and ash deposits, resulting in rich, nuanced colors and textures that are unattainable with electric or gas kilns.
Compared to typical electric and gas kilns, the entire wood-firing process, from loading the kiln, ignition, and sealing, to cooling, takes approximately 8 to 10 days.
Furthermore, the intense kiln pressure, along with factors like humidity, wood dryness, the rate of wood stoking, and kiln placement, can influence the success of the pieces, leading to a higher breakage rate.
Experienced wood-firing artisans carefully consider airflow within the kiln during placement, planning the arrangement of different-sized pieces, the path of the flames, how to stoke with wood and charcoal, and the precise heat control needed. Every step requires utmost focus to achieve a perfect wood-fired piece.
