He came to China at the age of twenty-seven to serve the imperial court with paintings. He served as an official in the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong dynasties. He is good at painting people, flowers and birds, especially dogs and horses. His painting method is based on Chinese tradition, adding Western light and shadow perspective methods and Western painting pigments. Therefore, all the paintings have bright colors and vivid images. There are sixteen paintings in this volume, depicting flowers of the four seasons, each decorated with boulders, feathers, and grass.
