A quiet cup of tea in the morning, a simple pleasure.
This teacup's glaze evokes misty mountains and gentle rain, a blend of blue and green with subtle hints of earthy yellow. The way the glaze flows across the surface looks as if the sky and the earth were inadvertently stirred together, unexpectedly creating such a unique beauty. As your fingers trace its surface, you can feel the warmth of time.
Brew a pot of tea in the morning, cup it by the window, and let your thoughts wander as the steam gracefully rises. Quench your thirst with water at midday, or enjoy a coffee in the afternoon to refresh your spirits. This cup is versatile, holding anything you desire and complementing every occasion. Its substantial yet comfortable feel in your hand is just right, as if crafted perfectly for the contours of your palm.
The irregular rim and the nuanced variations in glaze color add to its charm. Much of the beauty in this world lies not in perfection, but in those "imperfections" that are just right. Much like life, it's rarely a straight line, but a winding path, with scenery to be discovered at every turn.
With a cup in hand, a good day unfolds. Whether it's tea, wine, or simply plain water, each sip can be savored. This is how an object should be, accompanying you through life without pretense.
About the Artist
Master Ceramicist Liang Shih-chang was born in Tainan in 1957. At the age of 26, he apprenticed under master potter Weng Kuo-chen in Yingge, learning the art of wheel throwing and embarking on his journey into ceramics. He has since held numerous exhibitions. His research into glazes is deep and comprehensive, and he skillfully applies this knowledge, consistently pushing his boundaries in glazed works to create astonishing pieces.
In 1999, feeling his creative work had reached a plateau and uncertain of his future path in ceramics, Liang Shih-chang decisively set aside his artistic pursuits to focus on jade appraisal. It wasn't until 2021 that he resolved to return to ceramic creation. He spent two years familiarizing himself with glazes and producing hundreds of samples, aiming to forge a new style.
Liang Shih-chang's current works primarily feature "glaze paintings." He draws inspiration from nature, adhering to a principle of using no more than two glazes: artistic glazes and ceramic glazes. During production, he first selects glazes that can express the theme, then utilizes the properties of the glazes—their thickness, layering, separation, scraping, marbling, or dilution—to achieve the envisioned landscape. Simple motifs are then added in appropriate places to enhance the artwork's mood before firing.
Beyond glazes, materials for painting include the cracked textures and marbled patterns of the clay body, as well as natural elements like leaves and minerals.
Upon returning to ceramics, Liang Shih-chang finds inspiration in nature and expresses his artistic vision through glazes and clay bodies. Ideas emerge like bamboo shoots after rain. "Being able to convey artistic intent using my proficient ceramic techniques, glaze knowledge, and painting skills brings me immense joy and satisfaction. I hope this new beginning will establish my own unique ceramic style."
