◎ Bodhi root is not actually a tree root. It comes from the seed of the Palmyra palm, a type of bodhi seed. In ancient India, the leaves of the Palmyra palm were used to create Buddhist scriptures, known as "Pali scriptures." Bodhi root changes color with prolonged handling and may develop fissures over even longer periods, making it an excellent material for prayer beads.
Bodhi seeds are sacred Buddhist objects. The Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, and bodhi seeds symbolize awakening, wisdom, knowledge, and the path. Broadly interpreted, they represent the wisdom to sever worldly afflictions and achieve Nirvana. They also symbolize auspiciousness; long-term wear can bring peace and ward off evil. According to Buddhist scriptures, chanting with bodhi seeds yields immeasurable merit, making them one of the most widely used ritual objects. There are approximately over 300 types of bodhi seeds (seeds from plants used as bodhi), with over eighteen types commonly used for prayer beads, often referred to as "Eighteen Bodhi Beads," symbolizing the Eighteen Arhats. Among these, Star-Moon Bodhi, Phoenix Eye Bodhi, Vajra Bodhi, and Qilin Eye Bodhi are considered the four most renowned in the bodhi world.
