"Don't walk the wrong path."
The dolosse, originating from WWII, were initially designed as battlefield obstacles to block tanks. After the war, when discarded by the sea, their exceptional wave-breaking capabilities were discovered, leading to their ubiquitous presence in coastal landscapes today. Resembling zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), they are colloquially known as "jong-gwa-geok" in Taiwanese Hokkien. There's even an urban legend in Taiwan that suggests wrongdoers might be made into dolosse. However, on Taiwan's 1,338-kilometer coastline, dolosse, harbors, and seawalls constitute a significant portion, with 753 kilometers dedicated to such structures. These artificial concrete barriers prompt us to ponder their impact on coastal ecosystems and the connection between humanity and the ocean.
