Obake Puzzle SUMI

37 pieces in 150 minutes!? <Grand Prize Winner!> 10th Japan Society of Kansei Engineering "Kawaii Kansei Design Award" The Obake Puzzle is a high-difficulty puzzle series shaped like ghosts, with no distinction between front and back. Since 2016, about 10 different types of Obake Puzzles have been released. Recreating a “no-front-and-back” structure with paper is very difficult, so we developed a special manufacturing method. ＜Obake Puzzle SUMI＞ “SUMI” means ink in Japanese, the kind used in traditional calligraphy. It’s written with the same kanji character (墨) that also appears in “炭” (charcoal), as in the name of Tanjiro from Demon Slayer, though the meaning is different. In Japan, sumi ink is called bokuju and has a unique, deep color. We chose the name SUMI to give this puzzle a mysterious, inky atmosphere. This is the first paper-based Obake Puzzle! Although it’s paper, the material is as sturdy as board game pieces, with a smooth texture. SUMI (ink/charcoal) evokes the image of a ghost hiding in the darkness 👻 It almost looks like glowing eyes peering out from the dark—though it doesn’t actually glow! ＜Super Difficult＞ Only 37 pieces, but in prototype tests, challengers took an average of 2.5 hours! The difficulty is ghost-level! ＜Secret of the Difficulty 1＞ The designer made many ghost heads and bodies share the same shape, making it extra tricky! ＜Secret of the Difficulty 2＞ A unique method makes it impossible to distinguish between front and back sides. The Obake Puzzle team collaborated with Ikeda Paper Industries in Kumamoto. Although they said, “This is so difficult to make!” the puzzle was completed successfully! By cutting from both sides, the distinction between front and back completely disappears.
