Their **main differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and production methods**. **「Shuifei Sand」** **True red, with a slight orange hue. The surface has a warm, matte luster that becomes brighter with wear, forming a patina.** The production method involves repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, stirring with water, allowing it to settle, and collecting the upper "turbid liquid." It is then allowed to settle again (the Shuifei purification method). The cinnabar mud at the bottom is air-dried, then pressed using traditional methods. Uniform, fine mineral sparkle particles can still be seen on the internal cross-section. **「Emperor Sand」** **The color is a brighter true red, and it is harder.** The production method involves multiple processes such as crushing, grinding, magnetic separation, Shuifei purification, and high polishing from natural raw cinnabar ore, followed by traditional pressing. Emperor Sand has almost no mineral sparkle on the surface but has it internally. The surface features a **high-polishing** process that gives it a metallic sheen, especially under sunlight, enhancing its metallic feel. **「Zijin Sand」** **The color is purplish-red, and its hardness is slightly lower than Emperor Sand.** The production method involves multiple processes such as crushing, grinding, and screening from natural raw cinnabar ore, but **without Shuifei purification**. Therefore, the surface is not as fine, and it has small, scattered mineral sparkle particles, giving a "starry sky" effect. **「Crystal Sand」** **The color is purplish-red and translucent.** Large cinnabar particles are directly chipped from cinnabar ore. Large crystal particles are clearly visible on the surface. Under light, each particle is transparent, emitting a fluorescent red glow. > Cinnabar In the earliest written records, cinnabar was referred to by a single character, "丹" (dān). "丹" is an ideogrammatic compound character. In ancient times, miners would excavate pits and extract minerals from them. Thus, the character "丹" is essentially the character "井" (jǐng, well) with a dot in the middle, signifying something extracted from a mine. This something is cinnabar. Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, dānshā (vermilion) was called cinnabar. Avoid Corrosion Cinnabar is a mineral and is insoluble in water. However, frequent contact with chemicals such as soap and shower gel can corrode cinnabar. 2. Avoid Contact with Metal The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, causing cinnabar to irreversibly darken or blacken. 3. Avoid High Temperatures The mercury sulfide in cinnabar will only be released at a high temperature of 380 degrees Celsius.
