When customers ask if we have a fabric that represents Dihua Street, my mind doesn’t go to the red brick walls or the old-school dry goods. I think of narrow arcades crowded with food stalls, the scent of traditional herbs, and luxury cars parked in front of first-floor shops. I've been here for many years now, and some vanished views still linger in my memory — like the earliest version of the food court on the 4th floor of Yongle Market, now only visible in a scene from the movie Lucy. Even the newly rebuilt colonial-style buildings eventually get new acrylic signage, and old buildings continue to be torn down and replaced through urban renewal. Dihua Street, beneath its red brick facade, is really a world of concrete. What we think of as “tradition” has long since been covered and hidden beneath cement. In this pattern, every element reflects what I’ve experienced here. The cross-shaped structures resemble a map — and also echo the silhouettes of demolished buildings, replaced by rapidly rising steel frameworks. Countless single-story houses are being torn down. The once-clear view of Guanyin Mountain is now interrupted by the grid-like forms of steel construction. The entire city feels like it's in a state of constant change. Sometimes this grid reminds me of a map. I’ve wandered Yongle Market so many times, yet still find myself getting lost — even after all these years.
