"The black-faced spoonbill, hidden in the wetlands."
4463 was the recorded population of black-faced spoonbills in 2019. These esteemed visitors from the north fly over a thousand kilometers each year to warmer Asian regions, simply to spend their cold winters. The Tsengwen River estuary in Tainan is their largest wintering ground, but due to human interference and destruction, the black-faced spoonbills, which primarily inhabit estuaries, wetlands, and intertidal zones, once dwindled to just 288 individuals (1988). Humans, development, and ecology are intricately linked. Black and white, illusion and reality—much like the fate of the black-faced spoonbill, can you also see the thousand birds hidden amongst the flock?
