【Yamatano-orochi】
A giant snake that appears in mythology, there are many place names and shrines in Shimane Prefecture that are related to it. It has eight heads and tails, eyes like a ghost's lantern, straddles eight valleys and eight peaks, has cypress and cedar trees growing on its back, and its belly is bleeding and rotten. It was defeated by Susanoo no Mikoto in the upper reaches of the Hikawa River in Izumo Province.
When Susanoo no Mikoto, who was banished from Takamagahara, landed in Torikami in Izumo Province, he found Kushinadahime about to be sacrificed to Yamata no Orochi. Susanoo agreed to defeat Orochi in exchange for marrying Kushinadahime, and made her into a comb and put it in his hair. He had her parents brew Yashioori no Sake and prepared eight sake barrels at the eight gates. Orochi drank the sake, got drunk, and fell asleep, and was defeated in the meantime. A sword emerged from its tail and was presented to Amaterasu Omikami, later coming to be called Kusanagi no Otatsugu or Ame-no-Murakumo no Tsurugi.
