Damascening, known as 'damasquinado' or 'damasquino' in Spanish, is the art of decorating steel with gold and silver wire. It is an art of inlaying different metals into one another. (Typically gold or silver is inlaid into a dark, oxidized steel background), to produce intricate patterns resembling those of Niello. The English term derives from the similarity of the effect to the rich brocade patterns of damask silk. The technique is still practiced in cities that have a long history of damascening, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Toledo, Spain, Eibar in the Basque Country, and Kyoto in Japan. This piece has a wonderful texture, but it is still a pre-owned item with signs of age.
