Nineteen-year-old Neha, already a mother of three, had eyes of hazel-green that held a hint of weariness. In the tent of our dinner excursion, she skillfully worked with henna paste from a tube, adorning the hands of a continuous stream of guests with intricate mehendi designs. I asked Neha to draw inspiration from the patterns on the scarf covering her nose and mouth. She mentioned that while working as a mehendi artist in the camp, she had the opportunity to wear colorful and elaborately patterned robes. In less than five minutes, my left hand bore a flowing, ochre-colored pattern of circles and interweaving, vein-like networks. I cautiously asked if she had worn such decorations on her wedding day. Neha replied through her veil, "Yes, but it's a little different from the more popular Indian mehendi." Her family settled on this peninsula generations ago, seven generations to be exact, originating from Iran. Now, she travels to different places according to the seasons. Sometimes it's in tourist camps like this, in a quiet corner by the bonfire, awaiting visitors from abroad after their meals.
