[Synopsis]
Lin Xi's calligraphy on the cover reads "Once Upon a Time."
"Everyone has a past. In the past, we all envisioned the person we would become in the future. If two versions of ourselves were to meet in the corridor of time, would the me of today feel ashamed of the me of yesterday, or would I disappoint the me of yesterday?"
The original title was "Once Upon a Time – Lin Xi Around the 90s." This re-edited edition combines three of Lin Xi's early works published in the late 1980s and early 1990s: "A Certain Month, A Certain Diary," "Improvisation," and "On the Fringe of Prosperity."
This new edition features 153 selected life notes from the original publication, along with 10 early Cantonese micro-fiction pieces by Lin Xi (Chapter 7, "Extremely Short Stories Written in Youth"). It invites readers to revisit "once upon a time" with the author, where creation and reality intertwine. As the author says, "Thanks to writing those columns like a diary, I captured so many fragments of feelings and snippets of life from trivial matters. Now, I can reflect on my past self and see how I once viewed people, events, things, the world, and relationships."
Original Preface: "At that time, I had worked as a university teaching assistant, at a newspaper, and a television station, while simultaneously writing seven columns for newspapers and magazines. This resulted in a personal diary-like outpouring, mainly my observations on the chaotic tapestry of the world. You might disagree, but I hope after reading, you will understand me better and, through me, understand the world I see. There are also feelings from my university dormitory life; perhaps you haven't experienced this, but I hope you will empathize after reading."
New Edition's Poetic Preface:
"When the mood of this moment is understood,
This moment has already become
A past.
A past, and then another, and another.
Each past
Perhaps sees a new personality formed.
Once upon a time,
Reshaped by time,
Cannot be denied,
Only
Shyly accepted or resigned to.
Once upon a time,
Is an epitaph written in flesh and blood,
A life only known through living it.
How many pasts have been experienced?"
