▲ Mola ▲
Mola is a handmade textile, a part of the traditional female attire of the Kuna people from Panama and Colombia in South America. The tradition of Mola originated from the Kuna women's practice of painting their bodies with geometric patterns. After Spanish colonization and contact with missionaries, the Kuna people began transferring their traditional geometric designs onto textiles, initially by painting directly onto the fabric, and eventually using a reverse appliqué technique. Two to seven layers of fabric in different colors (usually cotton) are sewn together; then, the design is created by cutting through portions of each layer. The edges of the cut layers are then folded down and stitched. The quality of a Mola depends on the number of layers, the fineness of the stitching, the uniformity and width of the cuts, the addition of details such as borders or embroidery, and the artistic value of the design and color combinations. The status of Kuna women is determined by their ability to create Molas.
