Postcard, Ayusi Sweeping Bandits with a Lance, Giuseppe Castiglione, Qing Dynast

Collection description Castiglione (1688-1766), an Italian, became a monk in the Jesuit order at the age of 19. He studied oil painting and architecture. He came to China at the age of 27 and served the imperial court as a painter. He served in the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Yongzheng dynasties. During the three dynasties of Qianlong, he was good at painting figures, flowers and birds, especially dogs and horses. Ayuxi, a native of Junggar in Xinjiang, should have his arms amputated if he was found guilty. He later turned to the Qing court to serve him. Emperor Gaozong heard that he was brave and good at fighting and summoned him. He gave him silver and promoted his bodyguards. In the 20th year of Qianlong's reign (1755), when Yili was pacified, he established a military record in Gedeng'ola. Emperor Gaozong composed a song for it. In the seventh month, he ordered Ayuxi to go to the imperial palace and summoned Lang Shining to create a picture of holding a spear against the bandits.
