Those tails and eyespots are a deflection mechanism: predators strike at the false eye, catching the tail rather than the body, and the butterfly escapes with a nick rather than a lethal wound. It is one of the most elegant examples of deception in insect biology, and it is also one of the most beautiful things to draw — the tail tips, when lit from the right angle, have a slight iridescence. The Machaon swallowtail — Papilio machaon — is widespread across Eurasia from Britain to Japan, and it has been admired and illustrated since classical antiquity. The caterpillar is a masterpiece of camouflage progression: when young it mimics a bird dropping; when larger it turns bright green with black and orange markings and carries a bright orange forked organ called the osmeterium, which it deploys when threatened, releasing a pungent smell. The host plant in Europe is usually fennel, wild carrot or other members of the carrot family. I drew both wings open flat, slightly angled, so the structure of the yellow and black patterning reads across the whole surface. The eyespots I drew especially carefully — they are circular in the butterfly, ringed in blue, and the single red spot is exact.
