This bell-shaped lidded container features ginkgo leaves from the pottery's garden.
The design brings vibrancy, Japanese beauty, and a sense of the season.
This piece is a lidded container made on a potter's wheel using Shigaraki clay, then meticulously carved and lightened using the thin-walled technique of Kyoto Kiyomizu-yaki. Black glaze is applied to the interior to make the contents stand out, while the exterior is coated with a thinly applied, custom-blended glaze. The ginkgo pattern is carefully hand-painted, layer by layer, with repeated firings. Gilding with gold is technically challenging, requiring careful management of temperature and humidity during the process. The lid fit is also precisely executed.
The container helps keep contents from drying out easily and minimizes moisture absorption, making it suitable for pickled vegetables, konpeito (sugar candy), or even for serving rice for outdoor meals. It can also be used for burning incense, storing small items, or as a decorative piece in your room. It makes a thoughtful gift for someone special.
