In late 2024, just before a scheduled business trip to Korea, a sudden curfew was announced, only to be lifted moments before our flight. After arriving safely, we found ourselves trapped in a subway car as protesting crowds surged in. We were squeezed so tightly we could barely breathe, suspended in the air. We kept wondering what would happen, fearing a stampede. We encouraged each other to stay calm, to find ways to breathe, to keep our heads up, and to stand firm so as not to fall. Fortunately, after a few stops, the overwhelming crowd disembarked at Yeouido Station, leaving us shaken and tearful. A few stops later, we exited the subway and unexpectedly stumbled upon Hyejin's exhibition. The cats' languid and contented poses instantly calmed the storm we had just weathered. The shock and fright subsided, and we felt grounded once more. It truly made us feel, from the bottom of our hearts, that it's wonderful to have cats in this world. Hyejin's cat creations are such treasures. And so, this unexpected partnership came to be. 🤍 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54791025978_c361304614_c.jpg Hyejin's style blends modernity with traditional Korean techniques, developed through slow, deliberate hand-painting. We are deeply drawn to the nostalgic, retro feel in their works, reminiscent of the folk painting scrolls from Korea's Joseon Dynasty. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54789923222_46ac7b4975_c.jpg Every stroke meticulously renders exquisite detail, creating artworks that invite prolonged admiration. Creating art with traditional Korean techniques requires immense patience. The artist applies layers of delicate color, achieving rich depth and saturated hues. Even tiny butterflies and grasshoppers are rendered with such fine detail and soul. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54791008469_5cfdb8271f_c.jpg Each painting captures the essence of cats sharing our space. The cats' "unhurried" and "quietly present" demeanor conveys a message the artist wishes to share. Hyejin frequently holds solo exhibitions in Korea and has been creating art for over a decade. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54791102340_09288edf64_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54789923372_b9e7b97b2c_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54789923357_30bd7feac8_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54789923327_ebb7b5d094_b.jpg Hyejin primarily uses their own cats as inspiration, depicting them as playful yet sharp-eyed, with a charmingly "fierce yet cute" personality. This creates a sense of delightful conflict and harmony, a perfect fusion of tradition and modernity. By incorporating contemporary artistic styles and characters, the art portrays the lives and thoughts of animals within a traditional framework. The artist employs Korean paper and the *Gongbi* (meticulous brush) technique, less commonly seen in the market. This paper lends a warm overall tone to the artwork, while the intricate *Gongbi* lines provide exquisite detail. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54791008479_1a3b230ced_c.jpg This warm, unique combination allows the contemporary painting style to blend seamlessly.
