Handmade by a Japanese resident in Vietnam. https://youtu.be/To9853__kGY Freehand Embroidery Most of the embroidery on Pangandaran bags is done using freehand embroidery. We are often asked how freehand embroidery differs from standard machine embroidery. In standard machine embroidery, the machine reads an embroidery pattern and stitches it automatically, resulting in perfectly uniform designs. In contrast, freehand embroidery is an artisanal skill where the artisan manually moves the fabric to create the design. Because it's made by hand, each piece has its own unique character. No two embroidered designs are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture reminiscent of hand-stitching. It's an incredible craft that involves transferring a sketch to the fabric and meticulously stitching while referencing the original design, coordinating with the up-and-down motion of the sewing machine needle. In Vietnam, there are currently just over 400 people who can perform freehand embroidery, but only about 50 of them can do it professionally. Furthermore, only 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among these, only 10 can execute the intricate designs required by Pangandaran. However, exceptional skill alone isn't enough; embroidery requires a sense of artistry. Subtle nuances can significantly alter the overall impression. Therefore, at Pangandaran, we entrust our designs to Ms. Huong, who possesses the highest level of skill. Ms. Huong, currently 46 years old, has been embroidering since she was 15, making her a veteran of 31 years in this field. Moreover, she has a truly exceptional sense of design. We place our complete trust in her. With recent economic development, Vietnam, like many places, faces challenges in preserving traditional crafts. Since 2000, the number of individuals capable of freehand embroidery has been rapidly declining. While there used to be schools for this craft, it is now primarily taught through apprenticeships with skilled artisans. Ms. Huong has trained four apprentices so far, but she notes that there are no younger individuals capable of this technique. Due to rapid economic growth, manual crafts are being left behind, and the number of artisans is expected to continue decreasing. This trend is accelerating faster than in Japan, and as the national system offers little protection, Vietnamese freehand embroidery is facing a precarious future, potentially disappearing within the next decade or so. In the video, we had the privilege of Ms. Huong, a master artisan, create the "Sudden Rain" embroidery. Please witness the beauty of embroidery brought to life with her assured technique.
