What is "Sometsuke"?
"Sometsuke" is an underglaze decoration technique that uses "blue" pigment for painting. "Tsuke" means "decoration," thus "decorating with blue pigment."
This technique is commonly seen in Chinese blue and white porcelain from the Ming and Qing dynasties. In Japan, it is showcased on particularly white and light Arita Ware, where the resulting blue hue is exceptionally clean, earning its name "Sometsuke," reminiscent of indigo-dyed fabrics.
This ceramic technique involves applying glaze to bisque ware (semi-finished pieces) before a single high-temperature firing. Controlling the color variations is extremely difficult, making it a highly skillful and experienced method of painting and coloring. While this limits the range of suitable pigments, the finished pattern is covered with a transparent glaze layer, giving the porcelain surface a smooth and exceptionally luminous texture. Combined with the characteristic whiteness and lightness of Arita Ware, the entire piece appears exceptionally translucent and wear-resistant, making it ideal for everyday use.

About Arita Ware
Arita Ware originates from Saga Prefecture, the birthplace of Japanese ceramics. In the 1650s, it even gained popularity in Europe, opening up an international perspective for Japanese pottery. Its most distinctive features are its white and light texture, a hard yet glass-like fineness, and an unprecedented ceramic quality that amazed many. Combined with opulent Japanese decorative designs, it was highly favored by European nobility at the time.
For over 400 years, Arita Ware has fostered a unique Japanese aesthetic consciousness through tradition and innovation. Since 2016, new initiatives like the SAGAMA project have begun, showcasing the beauty of integrating modern and traditional craftsmanship.
