Wild jungle vines reveal the power and beauty of nature. Handmade, sturdy and durable. PIET or Pueraria phaseoloides thrives in northern Laos and is very similar to Japanese kudzu. Traditionally, the Khummu community uses PIET to make bags and backpacks for gathering wood and bush foraging. The production process is complicated. After collecting wild kudzu in the wild, it is soaked in water to soften it. It feels very comfortable to the skin, and the bark is peeled off. Female craftsmen roll the fibers on their calves (shanks, see video) to create threads. Using simple wooden sticks, women weave knots to create bags. This technique is somewhere between crochet and knitting. Our cooperative workshop Tikkiwalla PIET jungle kudzu bag is made by a group of women in Ban Maang Village, Laos, led by Ms. Ven. *Use natural plant dyes *Please note that each product is handcrafted in an artisan's home studio or village collective.
