The Dwarf Mulberry is a fruit-bearing plant, known for its small, charming fruits. (Currently bearing fruit; photos taken on 3/30) Unlike traditional bonsai that emphasize the beauty of leaves or flowers, the Dwarf Mulberry takes its miniature fruits as the focal point. The abundant fruits are not only visually pleasing but also, over time, display a rich spectrum of colors as they transition from green to ripe, showcasing the natural process of plant growth. There is a wide variety of fruit-bearing plants, each possessing unique growth habits to adapt to different environmental conditions. Despite their diversity, most fruit-bearing plants generally prefer ample sunlight, using photosynthesis to generate energy to support their growth, flowering, and fruiting. Pot Cultivation The Dwarf Mulberry thrives in environments with plenty of sunshine. Most fruiting bonsai require sufficient light to develop their colors properly. Insufficient light can lead to faded colors or fruit drop. During the fruit development stage, moderate application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer can enhance the vibrancy of the fruit colors. Excessive fruits can deplete nutrients, resulting in uneven or smaller fruits. Strategic thinning of fruits can improve the overall quality of the fruit. Pruning leaves at the appropriate time allows for better fruit development when new shoots emerge. Watering Method Water plants based on the principle of "water when dry, soak when wet." When the soil surface appears slightly dry, or the color of the topsoil lightens, it is time to water. Each watering should be thorough, applied slowly and evenly until water drains from the bottom of the pot, ensuring the entire soil mass is moistened. Avoid watering only the surface, which can lead to underwatered roots. This practice helps the plant balance water and air, aiding its growth. Never wait until the soil is completely dry to water. Due to the small and shallow pot, the soil can dry out easily, so it is essential to monitor moisture loss daily. During the hot summer months, a mist sprayer can be used to keep the leaves and branches moist. The Dwarf Mulberry requires adequate moisture during its fruiting period, but overwatering and excessively wet soil must be avoided, as this can lead to soil oxygen depletion, causing root rot and wilting. In autumn and winter, as the plant's growth slows, watering frequency should be reduced accordingly. Allowing the plant to experience natural rainfall outdoors can contribute to healthier growth. During pot cultivation, moderate pruning and repotting are performed.
