Water-ground Sand, King’s Cinnabar, Purple Gold Sand, and Crystal Sand are all high-content quality cinnabar. Their **primary differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and production method**.
**「Water-ground Sand」**
**A true red, with a slight orange undertone. It has a warm, matte finish that will become more lustrous with wear, developing a patina.**
The production method involves repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, mixing with water, allowing it to settle, and collecting the upper "turbid liquid." This is then allowed to settle again (the water-grinding purification method). The bottom cinnabar mud is air-dried, then pressed using ancient methods. Even on a cross-section, you can see fine, evenly distributed mineral flecks.
**「King’s Cinnabar」**
**A brighter, more vibrant true red color with higher hardness.**
The production method involves purifying natural raw cinnabar ore through multiple processes such as crushing, grinding, magnetic separation, water-grinding, and high polishing, then pressing it using ancient methods. King’s Cinnabar has almost no visible mineral flecks on the surface, but has them internally. The surface is treated with a **high-polishing** process to achieve a metallic sheen, especially under sunlight, enhancing its metallic quality.
**「Purple Gold Sand」**
**A purplish-red color with slightly lower hardness than King’s Cinnabar.**
The production method involves multiple processes such as crushing, grinding, and screening of natural raw cinnabar ore, but **without water-grinding purification**. Therefore, the surface is less refined and has scattered small mineral flecks, giving a "starry sky" effect.
**「Crystal Sand」**
**A purplish-red color, translucent.**
Large cinnabar particles are directly chipped from the cinnabar ore. The large crystal grains are clearly visible on the surface, appearing transparent under light and emitting a fluorescent red glow.

**> Cinnabar**
The earliest written records refer to cinnabar with a single character, "丹" (dān). "丹" is an ideogrammic compound character. In ancient times, mineral mines were dug into the ground, and minerals were extracted from the pit. Thus, the character "丹" is essentially the character "井" (jǐng, well) with a dot in the middle, signifying something extracted from a dug-out mine. This "something" is cinnabar.
Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, "丹砂" (dānshā, red sand) came to be called cinnabar. "丹" and "朱" describe the color, while "砂" describes the shape, meaning irregular granular minerals.
Cinnabar’s color is famously long-lasting. Chinese calligraphy and painting are called "丹青" (dānqīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. It is also an indispensable component of "八宝印泥" (bābǎo yìnní, eight-treasure seal paste).
From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that have gathered the essence of the sun and moon, absorbing the positive energy of heaven and earth. Therefore, cinnabar possesses a powerful Yang energy magnetic field. We observe that jade feels cool in the hand, while cinnabar feels warm.
Since ancient times, cinnabar has been used in Taoist rituals such as drawing talismans, consecration, dispelling evil, and suppressing malevolence. Cinnabar has always been regarded by people as a supreme item for improving luck, warding off evil, attracting blessings, and accumulating wealth. It carries auspicious meanings of good fortune and prosperity, peace and health.
The *Shennong Ben Cao Jing* (Classic of Materia Medica) lists cinnabar as a superior herb, often used in medicinal treatments for its properties of calming the spirit, detoxifying, and relieving insomnia and excessive dreaming.
Living in modern times, owning one or two cinnabar collectibles can also cultivate one's character and bring peace to the eyes and mind.
**> Identification**
**All cinnabar products in our store are high-content cinnabar with a strong sense of weight. You can use the following methods for identification:**
>. Burning cinnabar will turn it black. (Please heat through an intermediary. It is generally not recommended to directly burn finished products as controlling the time and area is difficult. If it turns black after prolonged heating, it cannot be restored.)
>. Real cinnabar can draw an orangey-red line on paper. (To avoid damaging the appearance of the finished product, please scratch on an inconspicuous area or use the complimentary bead for testing.)
**> Care**
**Energy Purification**: Regularly expose to moonlight or gently wipe with salt water to restore its magnetic energy.
**If cinnabar jewelry does not contain metal or plant-based components (such as wood, bamboo, Bodhi seeds, etc.), it can be lightly exposed to water, but prolonged soaking is not recommended as it can affect its luster.**
**It is not advisable to get the braided cord wet. If washed, it needs to be air-dried before wearing, as wearing a damp cord can lead to excessive dampness in the body, which is not ideal.**
1. Avoid Corrosion
Cinnabar is a mineral and does not dissolve in water. However, frequent contact with chemicals like soap and shower gel can corrode cinnabar.
2. Avoid Contact with Metals
The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, causing irreversible darkening or blackening of the cinnabar.
3. Avoid High Temperatures
The mercuric sulfide in cinnabar only releases at temperatures of 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, as long as you avoid exposing cinnabar jewelry to high-temperature environments, you can wear it with peace of mind.
4. Avoid Collisions with Hard or Sharp Objects
Cinnabar has high hardness but is brittle. Be careful to prevent drops.
5. How to Clean
If you find the cinnabar is dirty, do not soak it in water, as this can alter its original brilliance! You can gently wipe it several times with a slightly damp cotton cloth and let it air dry for a while.
6. Oiling for Maintenance
Apply a layer of white tea oil or olive oil to the finished product. Allow the surface to absorb the oil, making it more lustrous and clear. If applying oil, seal it in a brocade box, perhaps with a layer of plastic wrap to prevent the oil from staining the velvet lining of the box.
7. Frequent Handling
Frequently handle the cinnabar jewelry worn on your body with your hands, allowing the surface to absorb a thin layer of natural oils. Over time, it will appear more antique and elegant.
The actual product is more exquisite and beautiful than the photos.
