We often get asked, "How is shuttle embroidery different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery reads an embroidery design and automatically stitches it, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical pieces. In contrast, shuttle embroidery is an artisanal technique where the artisan manually moves the fabric while stitching the design. Because it's created by hand, each piece has a unique character. No two embroidery designs are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that rivals hand-embroidery. It's an incredible craft, imagining the artisan transferring the sketch onto the fabric and meticulously stitching while following the original design, coordinating with the up-and-down motion of the needle. Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam who can operate a shuttle embroidery machine, but only 50 of them work professionally. Furthermore, just 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among these, only 10 can perform the intricate embroidery required by Pangandaran. But being skilled isn't enough; embroidery requires artistic sensibility. A subtle nuance can significantly alter the overall impression. That's why we entrust our work to Hun, Pangandaran's most accomplished artisan. Hun, 46, has been embroidering since the age of 15, making him a veteran of 31 years in this field. He possesses a truly exceptional sense for design. We have complete faith in him. With recent economic development, Vietnam, like many countries, faces challenges in preserving traditional crafts. Since 2000, the number of shuttle embroidery artisans has been rapidly declining. While there used to be schools for this craft, now skilled artisans teach apprentices. Hun has trained four apprentices, but he notes that younger generations are not taking up the craft. Rapid economic growth has left traditional handwork behind, and it's predicted that the number of artisans will continue to decrease. This trend is accelerating even faster than in Japan, and without government support systems, Vietnam's shuttle embroidery faces a precarious future, potentially disappearing within a decade or two.
