Etched carnelians are created by drawing patterns with a substance derived from plant sap and then firing them. This particular bead dates back to approximately the 2nd century BCE to the 2nd century CE. It's truly moving to contemplate that such delicate patterns were meticulously crafted onto a tiny sphere so long ago! The bead features a pentagonal pattern with dotted accents on its perfectly round surface. Its small size only enhances the wonder of the intricate details and the skill of ancient artisans! This is a relatively well-preserved etched carnelian with excellent shape and minimal wear on its patterns. Roman glass originates from the Roman Empire period (27 BCE – 395 CE). A subtle iridescence, or "silicification," can be observed. Silicification occurs when glass is buried underground for extended periods, causing a chemical reaction between the glass and soil components, resulting in this shimmering iridescence. Not all glass buried for long durations develops this effect; it appears only when numerous specific conditions align.
