About the Artist Master ceramicist Liang Shih-Chang was born in Tainan in 1957. At the age of 26, he apprenticed under the renowned pottery master Weng Kuo-Chen in Yingge, learning the art of the potter's wheel, and thus embarked on his journey into the world of ceramics, holding numerous exhibitions along the way. His research into glazes is both profound and comprehensive, and he skillfully applies this knowledge, consistently pushing the boundaries of his craft to create awe-inspiring works. In 1999, feeling creatively stagnant and uncertain of his future path in ceramics, Liang Shih-Chang decisively abandoned his artistic pursuits to delve into jade appraisal. It wasn't until 2021 that he resolved to return to ceramic artistry. He spent two years reacquainting himself with glazes, producing hundreds of samples in his quest to forge a distinct style. Currently, Liang Shih-Chang's work primarily features glaze painting. He draws inspiration from the natural world, adhering to a principle of using no more than two glazes per piece: art glazes and ceramic glazes. During the creation process, he first selects glazes that can best express the theme, then utilizes their inherent properties—thickness, layering, isolation, carving, marbling, or bleeding—to manifest his envisioned landscapes. He adds simple strokes in appropriate places to enhance the artistic mood of the piece before firing it into its final form. In addition to glazes, materials for his ceramic paintings include the cracked textures and marbled patterns of the clay body, as well as natural elements like leaves and minerals. Regarding his return to ceramic creation, Liang Shih-Chang finds inspiration in nature and expresses his artistic concepts through glazes and clay bodies. Ideas emerge like bamboo shoots after a spring rain.
