This is then allowed to settle again (the "shuifei" purification method). The bottom cinnabar mud is air-dried and then pressed using ancient techniques. Because cinnabar is red, mostly a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, cinnabar was called "朱砂" (zhū shā).
