【Shan Hai Ji】
Echo II - Pyrite Ammonite Necklace
• The Shan Hai Series •
Animal bones and leather are the primary materials in this series, with works born from the spark of collision between skeletal remains and art.
Each unique skeleton is in its natural, original state, not artificially processed. It represents the final form of an individual life's vibrant journey, much like how each of us is striving to live as our true selves in this era.
Lamarck's theory of natural selection speaks to the principle of use and disuse. Bones, having undergone generational evolution, are the ultimate form adapted for survival. We invite you to join me as observers, to collectively cherish these final memorials of life.
• Design Concept •
This series features pyrite ammonites as its theme, with metal inlay used to highlight the most captivating aspects of these fossils. Each fossil requires eons of accumulation to form, and is then unearthed from deep within the earth's strata. Thus, the fossils we see are precious remnants, meticulously selected by nature over vast stretches of time.
Pyrite ammonites are ammonite fossils preserved by the replacement of the original shell with pyrite. Their formation requires an environment low in oxygen and rich in organic matter and sulfides. Under these conditions, iron ions react with hydrogen sulfide to produce pyrite, gradually replacing the original calcium carbonate structure. This mineralization process often preserves the ammonite's spiral structure and internal details, resulting in a high degree of preservation and a metallic visual effect. They are commonly found in specific geological strata in regions like Germany, the UK, and Russia.
