[About the Book]
Dr. Lin Shen, a Cambridge scholar, guides readers with the poetic and insightful pen of a humanist thinker through the heritage of castles, museums, metropolises, films, and novels across Europe, the UK, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, seeking to offer solace to our restless times. The series has garnered recommendations from across disciplines, including Hong Kong designer Kan Tai-keung, American philosophy professor Wang Wei-xiong, Taiwanese cultural professors Chiu Te-liang and Yip Yin-cheong, artist Victor Wong, and critic Tang Heng-chi!
Through art, we discern; embracing nature, we find elegance and morality, with precedents both East and West. Consider the Chinese saying "What kind of decorum is this?" or philosopher Wittgenstein's view that ethics and aesthetics are one and the same. Lin Shen begins with the story behind a French oil painting, presenting a discourse on art and authenticity, using sensibility to fill gaps, distinguishing propriety from ugliness, orthodoxy from absurdity. Join us in exploring positive forms of life within grand eras, seeking truth, exposing falsehood, breaking free from duality, and shining brightly.
[Praise]
"I am moved by this Hong Kong author's dedication to writing as his life's mission... Reading it feels like accompanying the author on a journey through Europe, listening to his commentary on art and architecture, broadening one's perspective on appreciation and inspiring new ways to discern authenticity and judge beauty and ugliness." -- Kan Tai-keung (Ink Painter, Designer, Artist)
"The author draws extensively from diverse sources, showcasing a vast scope of knowledge, and adeptly balances the refined and the popular, across both ancient and modern, Chinese and Western contexts... The core concept of 'fake authenticity' is profoundly meaningful and thought-provoking." -- Wang Wei-xiong (Professor of Philosophy, California State University)
"Not only does the author navigate erudite discussions of art theory, but he also traverses classics of Chinese and Western culture. More commendable still is that these are not mere flights of fancy in an ivory tower; rather, they are works executed with great ease, born from countless observations of paintings after traveling through European museums and historical residences. It truly embodies the spirit of 'traveling ten thousand miles and reading ten thousand books,' with insights gained effortlessly." -- Chiu Te-liang (Associate Professor and Acting Director, Graduate Institute of Social and Cultural Studies, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University)
"Intricate and astonishing... The author's profound knowledge will invariably lead readers to contemplate from an unfamiliar angle or scenario. The recurring discussion of authenticity versus falsehood in the book mirrors the very confusion of our era." -- Yip Yin-cheong (Associate Professor, Graduate Institute of Social and Cultural Studies, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University)
