A cup and saucer set where the inlaid pattern beautifully stands out against the calm texture of the earth.
These are carefully handcrafted vessels that bring a sense of Japanese aesthetic, making your everyday tea time feel special.
This piece is completed through a process of: forming with Shigaraki clay on a potter's wheel → carving → carving out the pattern → bisque firing → inlaying white clay into the patterned areas and wiping away excess → glazing → final firing. Because the clay of the pottery itself and the clay (mud) used for inlay are different types, their shrinkage rates during firing differ. This can sometimes prevent the white clay from settling well into the recessed areas, so the piece is created over time through repeated prototyping.
The cup is comfortable to hold and has a smooth rim.
Each piece can also be used individually; the cup can serve as a vessel for desserts, and the saucer can be used to present cakes or traditional Japanese sweets.
This would also be a delightful gift for someone special.
You can enjoy watching it deepen in character with use over time.
