Saint's Ball cactus, also known as Echinocactus grusonii, is a succulent plant belonging to the Echinocactus genus in the Cacti family. It typically has a spherical shape and is deep green or grayish-green. Mature specimens often develop side shoots. Its root system is fibrous, with 2-8 spines, and tubercles attached to the ribs. The most distinctive feature of the Saint's Ball cactus is its subtle ribbing, resembling a smooth, green mochi ball adorned with a few spines. It generally has fewer ribs, with 5 ribs being characteristic. Variations with 4 or 3 ribs are rarer and thus more valuable and expensive. This particular specimen is a rare four-ribbed variety, hence the slightly higher price. The most common form has 5 ribs, and those with more than 5 ribs are more likely to be hybrids.
Care Tips
The Saint's Ball cactus prefers full sun or partial shade and should be placed in a well-ventilated area, planted in a well-draining medium. Summer is its growing season, so watering should be reduced or stopped in winter. Varieties in this genus (Echinocactus) require a relatively high level of fertilizer; it is recommended to provide ample fertilizer to promote growth. This genus roots well and exhibits good vigor. Varieties that produce side shoots can be easily propagated from these offsets. However, new varieties are often cultivated through seeds, with seedlings appearing in about 3-4 weeks. Some species may take 1-2 years to bloom, and most cannot self-pollinate; successful fruit development occurs after artificial pollination.
In summer, the soil should be kept moist, with appropriate shading and improved ventilation. In winter, the soil should be kept dry, with ample light, and the temperature should not drop below 5Β°C.
Flowering
The Saint's Ball cactus flowers can be pink, pinkish-white, or rose-red, with darker stripes on the petals. Blooms typically last for several days. Flowering season is usually spring and autumn, and they are self-pollinating.
Cultivation Notes
Serious cultivation mistakes are rare and usually don't lead to the plant's demise. The plant will flower once it reaches a certain size. Due to variations in their native habitats, the specific growing environments and care conditions differ among species. They are sensitive to excessive moisture, so the soil needs to be breathable and loose.
π Key Highlights: Drought tolerant, full or partial sun, good ventilation and drainage, water once a week in summer, water every 6 weeks in winter, prefers fertilizer.
