《Freehand Embroidery Machine Stitching》
Most of the embroidery on Pangandaran bags is done using a 《freehand embroidery machine》.
We are often asked, "How is 《freehand embroidery machine stitching》 different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery is automated; the machine reads an embroidery design and stitches it automatically, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical designs.
In contrast, 《freehand embroidery machine stitching》 is an artisan skill where the craftsperson manually moves the fabric while stitching the design.
Because it's made by human hands, each piece has a unique character. No two embroidered designs are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that resembles hand embroidery. It's an incredible craft that involves transferring an outline to the fabric and stitching while referring to the original design, coordinating with the up-and-down movement of the machine needle.
In Vietnam today, there are only about 400 people who can perform freehand embroidery machine stitching. Of these, only 50 are able to do it professionally. Furthermore, only 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among them, only 10 can execute the intricate designs required by Pangandaran. However, being skilled alone isn't enough; embroidery also requires a sense of style. Even a slight nuance can significantly alter the overall impression.
For this reason, at Pangandaran, we entrust our work to Hun, who possesses the highest level of skill. Hun is currently 46 years old but has been stitching since he was 15, making him a veteran of 31 years in this craft. Moreover, he has an exceptional sense of style. We place our complete trust in him.
With recent economic development, Vietnam, like many places, faces challenges in preserving traditional crafts. Since 2000, the number of people capable of freehand embroidery machine stitching has been rapidly declining. While there used to be schools for this craft, now, skilled artisans train apprentices.
Hun has trained four individuals so far, but he notes that there are no young people today who can perform this technique. Due to rapid economic growth, manual crafts are being left behind, and it is predicted that the number of artisans will continue to decrease. This trend is faster than in Japan, and the national system does not actively protect these skills, meaning Vietnamese freehand embroidery machine stitching is on the verge of disappearing within the next decade or so.
In the video, we asked the highly skilled artisan Hun to create the "Sudden Rain Embroidery."
Please witness the beautiful embroidery brought to life with his precise technique.
