Water-ground cinnabar, Imperial cinnabar, Purple gold cinnabar, and Crystalline cinnabar all belong to high-content quality cinnabar. Their **primary differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and manufacturing methods**.
**"Water-ground Cinnabar"**
**True red of China, with a slight orange hue. The surface has a warm, matte luster that becomes brighter with wear, forming a patina.**
The manufacturing process involves repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, mixing with water, allowing it to settle, and collecting the upper "turbid liquid." This is then left to settle again (the water-grinding purification method) to obtain the bottom cinnabar mud, which is air-dried and then pressed using ancient methods. Even on the cross-section, uniform, tiny mineral sparkles can be seen internally.
**"Imperial Cinnabar"**
**The color leans towards true red, with a brighter hue and higher hardness.**
The manufacturing process involves purifying natural raw cinnabar ore through multiple steps such as **crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/water-grinding/high polishing**, and then pressing it using ancient methods. Imperial cinnabar has almost no external mineral sparkles, but has them internally. The exterior employs a **high-polishing** technique to achieve a metallic sheen, especially in sunlight, maximizing its metallic appearance.
**"Purple Gold Cinnabar"**
**The color leans towards purplish-red, with slightly lower hardness than Imperial cinnabar.**
The manufacturing process involves multiple steps from natural raw cinnabar ore such as **crushing/grinding/screening**, but **without water-grinding purification**. Therefore, the surface is not as delicate and has scattered tiny mineral sparkles, giving a "starry sky" effect.
**"Crystalline Cinnabar"**
**The color is purplish-red and translucent.**
Large cinnabar crystals are directly chipped from the cinnabar ore. The surface clearly shows large crystal particles. Under light, each bead is transparent, emitting a fluorescent red glow.
**> Spring Plowing and Autumn Harvest**
**Everything in this world that unfolds, that is poetic, that is beautiful, often happens naturally, just like the changing seasons.**
**Learn to slow down, clear your mind, treat life with gentleness, respect the power of time, and let everything grow naturally, like a tree, focused and fearless, growing clear growth rings.**
**Our handicrafts are just the same!!**
**> Cinnabar**
The earliest written records refer to cinnabar with a single character, "丹" (dān). "丹" is an ideogram. In ancient times, miners would dig shafts into the earth to extract minerals. Thus, the character "丹" is actually the character "井" (jǐng - well) with a dot in the middle, signifying something extracted from a mine shaft. This "something" was cinnabar.
Because cinnabar is red, mostly a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, "丹砂" (dānshā - red sand) came to be called "朱砂" (zhūshā - cinnabar). "丹" and "朱" describe the color, and "砂" describes the shape, referring to irregular granular minerals.
Cinnabar's color is enduring. Chinese calligraphy and painting are called "丹青" (dānqīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. It is an indispensable component of pigments, and the "Eight Treasures Seal Paste" is also primarily made of cinnabar.
From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that gather the essence of the sun and moon. It absorbs the positive energy of the universe, thus possessing a powerful yang magnetic field. We observe that jade feels cool in the hand, while cinnabar feels warm.
Since ancient times, cinnabar has been used in Taoist rituals for drawing talismans, consecration, warding off evil, and suppressing malevolent energies. Cinnabar has always been regarded as a supreme material for enhancing luck, transforming fortunes, suppressing evil, attracting blessings, and accumulating wealth. It carries auspicious meanings of immense good fortune, prosperity, and well-being.
The *Shennong Ben Cao Jing* (Classic of Materia Medica) lists cinnabar as a superior substance, often used in medicinal treatments for its ability to calm the spirit, detoxify, and alleviate insomnia and excessive dreaming.
Living in modern times, owning one or two cinnabar artifacts can also cultivate one's character, soothe the eyes and the heart.
**> Authentication**
**All cinnabar products in our store are high-content cinnabar with a strong sense of weight. You can use the following methods for authentication:**
>. Burning cinnabar will turn it black. (Please heat it indirectly. It is generally not recommended to burn the finished product directly, as controlling the time and area is difficult. Prolonged burning will cause irreversible blackening.)
>. Genuine cinnabar can draw an orange-red line on paper. (To avoid damaging the appearance of the finished product, please draw on an inconspicuous area or use the complimentary bead provided.)
**> Maintenance**
1. Avoid corrosion.
Cinnabar is a mineral and does not dissolve in water, but frequent contact with chemicals such as soap and shower gel can corrode cinnabar.
2. Avoid contact with metal objects.
The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, causing irreversible dulling or blackening of the cinnabar.
3. Avoid high temperatures.
The mercury sulfide in cinnabar only releases at temperatures of 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, as long as cinnabar jewelry is kept away from high-temperature environments, it can be worn with peace of mind.
4. Avoid collision with hard or sharp objects.
Cinnabar is hard but brittle; handle with care to prevent drops.
5. How to clean.
If you find your cinnabar is dirty, do not soak it in water, as this will alter its original luster! You can gently wipe it several times with a slightly damp cotton cloth, and it will recover after a while.
6. Oiling for maintenance.
Apply a layer of white tea oil or olive oil to the finished product, allowing the surface to absorb the oil and become more lustrous and radiant. If, after applying oil, you seal it in a brocade box, you can wrap it in a common plastic wrap to prevent the oil from staining the brocade box lining.
7. Frequent handling.
Regularly handle the cinnabar jewelry worn on your body with your hands. This allows a very thin layer of oil to adhere to the surface, making it appear more ancient and elegant over time.
The actual product is more exquisite and beautiful than the photos.
