Kadun Barleycorn chess set, 1990 to 2000

Original rare chess set from Russia, 1990s - 2000s model is called «Barleycorn», made by KADUN. Made of pear tree and redwood. Great overall vintage condition. Pristine. No chips. Please see photos. Made uniquely from wood. Weighted. King is 11,5 сm tall. Fits boards: 40*40 / 45*45 cm / 50*50 cm Barleycorn Chess - the English chess style from the middle of the 18th century. Chess sets of this model were often given as gifts to business partners and friends. Similar chess sets, in red and white, were presented to the American president Thomas Jefferson between 1785 and 1789. The kings have high headdresses, reaching a height of 12.5 cm and featuring an abstract form. The circular pattern used for the external decoration of the pieces resembles barleycorns, hence the name of the series - Barleycorn. The rooks, kings, queens, and pawns have jewelry reminiscent of the corrugated collars popular at that time. The pieces are clearly defined, even for beginners. Each piece is placed on a small, round pedestal of individual design, with weightings in the supports. The bottom is lined with velvet for smoother sliding on the board. The large sizes contribute to a sense of weightiness in play, and the set has a high level of presentation. This is one of the reasons why Barleycorn Chess quickly gained popularity in Europe. Barleycorn Figures are made of beech tree. All pieces are weighted, with bases lined with soft tissue.
